America and Russia talk for first time in a year over Ukraine war

The defence ministers of Russia and the United States have spoken by telephone about the war in Ukraine. The last such conversation was more than a year ago. The call came a few days after an attack in Crimea, possibly by US missiles, which has strained relations.

The Pentagon, as usual, did not disclose the details of the conversation between US Secretary Austin and his Russian counterpart Belusov. The Office of the Department of Defence only revealed that the two discussed 'the importance of open lines of communication'.

The Russian Defence Ministry says on Telegram that the conversation occurred at America's request and that they "exchanged views" on the war in Ukraine. "Belusov pointed out the danger of further escalation due to the continued supply of US weapons to Ukraine," it said.
