Construction work has started on a by-pass road in the intersection Tsaghkavan-Itsaqar-Gandzaqar of the Aygehovit-Vazashen-Paravaqar-Aygepar highway in the region of Tavush in the North of Armenia. This follows incidents in October when traffic on the road came under shelling from Azerbaijani military units on the other side of the frontier.
The region is far away from the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone and line of contact and had previously been largely peaceful. The Azerbaijani side never confirmed or commented on the incident.
The Armenian news agency Mediamax said that the by-pass road is 3.8 kilometers long and cuts through forest land. It is expected that the construction will take between four to six weeks to complete.
