Hopes increase of a meeting between the two Presidents soon.

There is increasing hope that a meeting between the Presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan may take place in the coming weeks. Ambassador Igor Popov, the Russian diplomat who co-chairs the OSCE Minsk Process said that the Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliev has now agreed to the meeting. Popov, accompanied by the other two co-Chair of the Minsk Process, Ambassador Faure of France and Ambassador Warlick of the United States met Aliev on Monday at the start of a diplomatic mission to the region.

The diplomats hope that a meeting between the two Presidents will bring the negotiations on finding a peaceful solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh problem back on track. The three co-Chair are now in Yerevan where they will meet with President Sargsyan. A formal announcement on a meeting between the two Presidents will be made after that meeting.

Commonspace.eu political editor said in a comment that it is far too early to speak of a breakthrough. "The fact that a meeting will take place is however a positive sign, and can be the start of a new substantive phase in the negotiations. Much will depend on whether the sides approach the negotiations constructively, and with a willingness to compromise. The two Presidents have held direct talks before so they are already used to each other. Expectations from what can be achieved from such a e meeting however need to remain modest."

Thursday Interview: Murad Muradov

Today, commonspace.eu starts a new regular weekly series. THURSDAY INTERVIEW, conducted by Lauri Nikulainen, will host  persons who are thinkers, opinion shapers, and implementors in their countries and spheres. We start the series with an interview with Murad Muradov, a leading person in Azerbaijan's think tank community. He is also the first co-chair of the Action Committee for a new Armenian-Azerbaijani Dialogue. Last September he made history by being the first Azerbaijani civil society activist to visit Armenia after the 44 day war, and the start of the peace process. Speaking about this visit Murad Muradov said: "My experience was largely positive. My negative expectations luckily didn’t play out. The discussions were respectful, the panel format bringing together experts from Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Turkey was particularly valuable during the NATO Rose-Roth Seminar in Yerevan, and media coverage, while varied in tone, remained largely constructive. Some media outlets though attempted to represent me as more of a government mouthpiece than an independent expert, which was totally misleading.  Overall, I see these initiatives as important steps in rebuilding trust and normalising professional engagement. The fact that soon a larger Azerbaijani civil society visits to Armenia followed, reinforces the sense that this process is moving in the right direction."
