US Vice President Joe Biden met Georgian Prime Minister Georgi Kvirikashvili in Washington on Wednesday, with Biden reaffirming support for Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic integration.
The two also discussed the referendum that may soon take place in the breakaway province of South Ossetia, with the two leaders agreeing such a move would violate Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Leonard Tibilov, the South Ossetian president, said earlier this month that a referendum on acceding to the Russian Federation is likely “before August”.
The two also discussed the parliamentary elections in Georgia, scheduled to take place in October.
On Twitter, Kviriashvili called the meeting “productive”, and thanked Biden for his “continued support for Georgia”.
