Several persons were injured in a village in Georgia's Marneuli District on Thursday evening (20 October) when unidentified persons opened fire on a candidate of the ruling Georgian Dream party and his companions, who were canvassing ahead of Saturday's Municipal Elections.
Marneuli is a mainly Azerbaijani speaking district in Georgia's Kvemo Kartli region.
Of the four men hurt in the incident, two are in serious condition.
Georgia's Interior Minister Giorgi Mghebrishvili visited the scene of the crime on Thursday night and said that a full investigation is under way and all possibilities are being considered. He urged the media not to politicise the incident since a number of explanations could be possible.
