Hundreds of Thousands Gather in Yemen for Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday Amid Ongoing Tensions

On Thursday (4 September), across Yemen, hundreds of thousands of Muslims commemorated the birth of Prophet Muhammad (Mawlid al-Nabi) in a widespread celebration. Mawlid, observed on the 12th of Rabi’ al-Awwal in the Islamic calendar, is the traditional date of the Prophet's birth and death, and is celebrated globally by Sunni and Shia communities alike.

Celebrations unfolded in approximately 70 locations nationwide, including large gatherings in Sana’a and Houthi-held areas, marked by green flags, chants, and communal prayers. Devotees arrived early at the sites to participate in Quran recitations, sermons, and festive processions.

The festivities in Yemen reflect resilience amid years of civil conflict and humanitarian crisis, as communities celebrate their faith together.
