Electricity outrage leaves Baku and large parts of Azerbaijan in darkness

There was an electricity outrage in the Azerbaijan power grid, leaving most of Baku and large parts of Azerbaijan in darkness for several hours. According to Azerbaijan media reports fire broke out in in the first and the sixth power units at the "Azerbaijan" Thermal Power Station, located in the city of Mingachevir. The news portal Haqqin.az reported the outrage shortly after midnight on Tuesday.

Power was restored to Baku Airport and most strategic installations within a few hours but problems persist. The Ministry of Energy in a statement said that the outrage resulted from an exceptionally high demand in electricity as the result of high temperatures in the country over the last days.
