Bidhzina Ivanishvili, the founder of the Georgian Dream party, the political movement that has led Georgia since 2012, will return to the centre stage of Georgian politics, assuming the role of party chairman. The move is expected to take place at the party congress on in May.
In 2012 Ivanishvili launched a political movement which ousted the government of Mikhail Saakashvili in hardly contested but overall free parliamentary elections. The movement was spearheaded by the Georgian Dream Party. Ivanishvili served as prime minister for one year before handing power to one of his close allies. he has kept a strong influence on georgian politics, but from a distance.
