Azerbaijan calls early presidential elections

Azerbaijan has called early presidential elections.

A presidential decree issued on Monday (5 February) set the date for 11 April. Earlier it had been announced that the presidential elections were to be held in October of this year. In order for elections to be held in April the presidential decree declares the April elections as "extraordinary".

There are already speculations as to why the elections are being held earlier than expected, but the most likely one is that the government wants to keep the period of uncertainty to the minimum. Last week senior MP and ruling New Azerbaijan Party official, Siyavoush Novruzov, said that the government was expecting provoctaions from many sources ahead of the elections.
