Holocaust Memorial Day marked by warnings against modern-day antisemitism and intolerance

President Joe Biden spoke of the influence that the ‘Unite the Right’ rally in 2017 in Charlottesville had on his decision to run for president – “the white nationalists and neo-Nazis spewing the same anti-Semitic bile we heard in the 1930s in Europe”. He referred to the Holocaust as “no accident” and that “Silence is complicity”.

The UAE Minister of State for Foreign Trade affirmed the UAE’s willingness to support joint Gulf action in various priority economic issues. Some of the expected changes is an amended consumer protection system, the adoption of the amended patent system, and continuing to support and encourage small and medium enterprises and institutions.

The Chinese leader’s comments appear to have a least two motives: as a response to President Biden’s assertion that an alliance of democracies needs to work together to combat China’s rise; and as a thinly veiled defence of China’s heavily criticised human rights abuses –  which Xi characterises as “internal affairs” – and sanctions being considered in the West in response to them.
