Update 1 1645 CEST (1845 Baku/Yerevan)

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov in Washington on Friday, as the US pushes for a cease fire and resumption of negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan on the Karabakh conflict.

_______________

US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo will meet with the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan on Friday as efforts continue to stop the ongoing fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh and bring the sides back to negotiations.

The US has largely played a low key role during the four weeks of fighting, but joined in with statements and efforts within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chair trio, of which it is a part, together with France and Russia. At the meeting today in the State Department Pompeo is likely to reiterate support for that negotiating framework, but may also push forward some new ideas, including on the future of a peacekeeping force in the region.
