Israeli troops have launched a ground offensive in southern Lebanon

The Israeli army has begun 'limited, localised and targeted attacks' on Hezbollah targets in the border area of southern Lebanon, the army announced in a statement overnight Monday to Tuesday (1 October). Soldiers on the ground will be supported by the Israeli Air Force.

In the statement, the Israeli army said it struck targets near the border with Israel that posed an 'imminent threat to communities in northern Israel'.

The Israeli army statement said it was 'Operation Northern Arrows' and that it was 'parallel to the fighting in Gaza'. It is the first time since 2006 that Israeli forces have been active on Lebanese territory.
