Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev met with European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini on Monday evening in Vienna, with both sides saying the encounter was productive.
The two officials hailed cooperation between Azerbaijan and the European Union, while also speaking highly of Mogherini’s recent two day visit to Azerbaijan (29th February – 1st March), according to Aliyev’s official website.
“They exchanged views over settlement of the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The sides discussed recent events on the line of troops` contact, and underlined the importance of observing the ceasefire as a result of mutual understanding and confidence building measures,” the president's statement said.
Aliyev was in Vienna to meet Armenian president Serzh Sargsyan for the first time since the ongoing low-level hostilities between the two countries boiled over into four days of fierce fighting at the start of April, which killed dozens.
The meeting was facilitated by the OSCE, which is headquartered in the Austrian capital. Aliyev also had a one-on-one meeting with US Secretary of State John Kerry.
