Armenian president, Armen Sargissian resigns
23 January 2022
In a statement issued to the media on Sunday evening (23 January), Sargissian indicated that he was frustrated at the lack of power of the presidency, which under the current Armenian constitution is largely an honorary position.
In his statement Sargissian said, "the President does not have the necessary tools to influence the radical processes of domestic and foreign policy in these difficult times for the country and the nation."

Aliyev in "excellent meeting" with EU diplomats to follow-up on December discussions in Brussels

A delegation of EU diplomats is currently in the South Caucasus to follow-up on discussions held in Brussels last December in the framework of the VI Eastern Partnership Summit, particularly as related to Armenia-Azerbaijan relations. The delegation is led by Toivo Klaar, the EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus and Isabel Dumont, the French President's Adviser on Continental Europe and Turkey. France currently has the rotating presidency of the European Union.

Georgia insists it will not participate in 3+3 format

In an interview with the Turkish newspaper Daily Sabah, Georgia's Ambassador to Turkey, George Janjgava. said on Monday (3 January) that his country will not participate in the next 3+3 Caucasus platform meeting to be held in Turkey.

Borrell: "Europe's security is under threat"

The EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, in a statement on Wednesday (22 December), said Russia's actions in Eastern Europe and the Caucasus have created new threats and fears of invasion, and that Europe was today under threat. Borrell's statement was in response to Russia's recent attempts to re-define Europe's security architecture. On Wednesday, Borrell also discussed the situation with US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken.

Rapporteurs say Armenian and Azerbaijani experts working on a report on how short, medium and long-term confidence building measures can contribute to lasting peace in the South Caucasus are on schedule to publishing their report next March. The group is currently engaging with both governmental and non-governmental stakeholders, and a number of interim discussion papers will also be published over the next weeks.
