European council president Charles Michel, on Thursday at 1100 CET held a telephone conversation with the president of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev during which he congratulated him on his re-election as president following the 7 February early presidential elections.
In a read out posted on the website of the Azerbaijani president, it was stated that "during the telephone conversation, various aspects of the relations between Azerbaijan and the European Union, especially the issues of cooperation in the field of energy and transport, were widely discussed. Charles Michel emphasized that the European Union is coming up with specific projects to develop relations with the countries of the region in the field of transport and connections.
The parties also touched on the issues of holding COP29 in Azerbaijan and cooperation between the European Union and Azerbaijan in this context."
The read out says that "Charles Michel asked President Ilham Aliyev to state his position regarding the resumption of meetings between Azerbaijan, Armenia and the European Union in a tripartite format in Brussels.
President Ilham Aliyev said that Azerbaijan always supports trilateral meetings held in Brussels at the initiative of Charles Michel.
During the conversation, views were exchanged on peace negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, and the joint statement adopted on a bilateral basis between the Administration of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the office of the Prime Minister of Armenia on December 7 was emphasized as an important step forward."
