Russian president Vladimir Putin on Sunday (29 July) reviewed the main annual parade of the Russian Navy on the Neva River in St Petersburg.This year, the parade included more than four thousand Navy personnel from the Baltic, Northern and Black Sea fleets and the Caspian Flotilla, as well as more than 40 ships and motor boats of various kinds, along with a Navy aviation group
Ahead of the main part of the parade, President Putin reviewed combat vessels, which were lined up in parade formation near Kronstadt, and welcomed their crews. The President also visited the Peter and Paul Fortress and the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul.
Addressing the sailors and officers, the Russian president said:
"The Russian Navy has been successful ensuring our national defence capability, and continues to make a substantial contribution to the fight against international terrorism, while also playing a vital role in guaranteeing strategic parity. Every day dozens of ships and submarines are out there at sea carrying out their duties and looking after Russia's interests on the high seas."
Russia has in recent years embarked on a massive modernsiation programme of its navy.
