Human Rights high on the agenda at meeting of PACE president with the president of Azerbaijan

Human rights were high on the agenda at a meeting between the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Liliane Maury Pasquier, and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, held in Baku on Thursday (12 September).

A statement published on the president's website said that the sides "broadly discussed various aspects of cooperation between Azerbaijan and the Council of Europe. The sides touched upon the issues of Azerbaijan`s joining the conventions within the Council of Europe and harmonization of the country`s legislation in this regard. The issues of the protection of human rights and democratic development in Azerbaijan were also discussed at the meeting."

The report also stated that the two sides had a broad exchange of views on the issues of mutual interest on the agenda of the Council of Europe.

Earlier, the President of PACE emphasised the importance of complying with decisions of the European Court of Human Rights. (ECHR). The court has made a number of decisions regarding Azerbaijan in recent years.
