Georgian NGOs call for resignation of Justice Minister

A number of influential NGOs in Georgia have called for the resignation of the Justice Minister, Thea Tsulukiani from her position, provoking a sharp rebuke from prime minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili.

Representatives of the NGOs told a press conference in Tbilisi on Tuesday that they believed the Minister should not be the one leading the consultation process ahead of the appointment of a new Prosecutor General

The NGOs claimed that there was a systematic crisis in Georgia's judicial system which they claim was the result of failure to implement promised reforms. Among the NGOs issuing the statement were ISFED, GYLA, TI Georgia, EMC, OSGF, Human Rights Center, IDFI, GDI, Article 42 of the Constitution, Sapari, and others.

Writing on his facebook page, Prime Minister Khvirikashvili described the call of the NGOs as absurd saying

It is unacceptable that a part of the NGOs speaks in the language of ultimatums and tries to cast doubt on the process. their statements make it clear that they are trying to politicize the issue, which is totally unacceptable. Therefore, I urge them not to go beyond the mandate of their activities and show more responsibility if their goal truly is a transparent selection process.
