The Defence Ministers of Russia and Azerbaijan have discussed "pressing issues related to bilateral military relations between the two countries". According to the spokesperson of the news service for the Russian Defence Minister Irina Kovalchuk

Gabala radar station was built in the Soviet times as one of the most important elements of missile defense system in the USSR. After Azerbaijan gained independence and the radar station became its property, Russia continued to use the station. The ten-year agreement on the rent of the radar station by Russia was signed in 2002.
