The United States (US) will supply Ukraine with a new Patriot air-defence system. The system is one of the best air-defence weapons, but the US and its allies have a limited supply. This was reported by the New York Times on Tuesday evening (11 June), citing two US officials.
The officials said US President Joe Biden had approved the move. It would be the second Patriot system the US has given to Ukraine, although the Pentagon has routinely provided an undisclosed number of missiles for the system. Other allies, including Germany, have also provided air defence systems and ammunition for them. In recent months, the Ukrainians have frequently asked for additional anti-aircraft systems as they have become increasingly vulnerable to Russian air strikes. In late May, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine needed seven more Patriots.
This is the second Patriot that the US will give to Ukraine. The air defence system is currently based in Poland.
