Russia takes over the chairmanship of the UN Security Council for the month of September

Russia on Sunday (1 September) assumed the chairmanship of the United Nations Security Council. Chairmanship of the Council rotaters monthly between the 15 member states by alphabetical order. The Russian Chairmanship co-incides with the opening of the 74th Session of the UN General Assembly when world leaders are expected to travel to New York to deliver their country's vision on international relations.

Two ordinary meetings of the Security Council are envisaged in September, but other meetings can be called according to circumstances. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is expected to attend some of the Council meetings as part of his engagements at the UN this month.
