A female suicide bomber blew herself up at a policy checkpoint on the outskirts of the capital Grozny on Saturday (17 November).
The Russian news agency TASS, citing the Chechen Acting Interior Minister Alti Alaudinov said the young woman blew herself up killing herself, but no one else was killed or injured. "At about 4 p.m. on Saturday, a young woman approached Federal Police Checkpoint 21 on the outskirts of Grozny's Staropromyslovsky district," he said.
"Seeing her weird behavior, the officers on duty told her to stop and show her ID. Instead of meeting the demand, the woman ran towards the checkpoint. The police officers noticed her wearing a suicide belt and at that moment they fired a warning shot," Alaudinov said.
Chechnya remain restless despite draconian security measures. A low intensity Islamist inspired insurgency has been simmering for decades. This is not the first time that female suicide bombers have struck in Chechnya. The perpetrators are often sisters or daughters of male insurgents who had been previously killed in security operations, and who swore to revenge their relatives.
