EU Council president Charles Michel discusses Aegean issues with Turkish president

European Council President, Charles Michel, on Sunday (6 September) phoned Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, to discuss the escalating Greek-Turkish tensions in the Aegean Sea.

In its read out of the conversation the Turkish Presidency said President Erdogan called on the EU to be objective, adding that the EU's attitude towards the eastern Mediterranean will be a test of its sincerity. According to CNN Turk, the President asked the European Union prevent Greece from increasing tension in the Mediterranean.

On its part, the Greek news site Ekathimerini said that Michel expressed solidarity with Greece and Cyprus.

Michel said Friday (4 September) that EU leaders will meet on 24 and 25 September and proposed a multilateral conference to defuse tensions in the Aegean Sea.
