The Co-Chairs of the Geneva International Discussions (GID), Toivo Klaar, Cihan Sultanoğlu and Rudolf Michalka from the EU, the UN and OSCE, visited Tbilisi and Tskhinvali ahead of the 51st round of the GID which is due to take place between October 6-7.
In Tbilisi, the Co-Chairs held meetings with Georgian Foreign Minister Davit Zalkaliani and Head of the State Security Service Grigol Liluashvili. Georgian officials expressed concerns over the recently resumed "borderization" process and detentions of Georgian nationals across the South Ossetia dividing line, calling for the immediate release of Zaza Gakheladze, Khvicha Mghebrishvili and Genadi Bestaev.
The Russian occupation forces resumed illegal "borderization" activities near Tskhinvali/South Ossetian occupation line adjacent to the Khurvaleti village, the State Security Service of Georgia reported on September 12.
Khurvaleti "borderization" took place a few days after Georgian authorities spotted fencing activities in the vicinity of the nearby village of Karapila.
In Tskhinvali, the Co-Chairs met with Russia-backed S. Ossetian representatives led by Murat Jioev. Tskhinvali leader's special representative on post-conflict settlement proposed Tbilisi to begin delimitation of the "border" to tackle a number of humanitarian problems. Tskhinvali authorities further accused Tbilisi of continued policy to "discredit South Ossetia" in the eyes of the international community and slammed "revanchist statements" by some of the Georgian leaders.
