Baku is pushing forward in its bid to host the Expo 2025 - world exhibition. On Thursday (14 December) Baku's bid was presented to the diplomatic community in Azerbaijan at a ceremony held at the Heidar Aliyev Foundation. The Executive Director of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Anar Alakbarov, who is also assistant to the first vice-president of Azerbaijan, addressed the gathering.
'Developing human capital, building a better future' is the theme put forward by Azerbaijan as the centrepiece of its bid to host the exhibition
Azerbaijan is hoping to capitalise on the fact that no major global exhibition has been held in the region stretching from Eastern Europe to the Caspian Sea.
Azerbaijan faces tough competition for its bid. Three other countries are bidding for Expo 2025 - France (in Greater Paris), Japan (in Osaka), and the Russian Federation (in Ekaterinburg).
Azerbaijan now has one year to convince the 170 Member States of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) and a decison will bet taken at the 164th General Assembly in November 2018.
World Expos are organised every five years. The themes of World Expos are designed to raise awareness of and find responses to universal challenges of our time. The next World Expo will take place in Dubai (UAE) between 20 October 2020 and 10 April 2021 under the theme "Connecting Minds, Creating the Future".
