Armenia, and Armenians all over the world are today marking Armenian Genocide Day. The day commemorates attrocities committed against the Armenian population in the final days of the Ottoman Empire, during which as many as one million people are said to have died.
In Yerevan, President Armen Sarkissian and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan visited the Tsitsernakaberd Memorial to pay tribute to the memory of the victims. The president and the prime minister were accompanied by their spouses.
Catholicos Garegin II, Speaker of Parliament Ararat Mirzoyan, Cabinet members and other officials were also in attendance.
Ceremonially wreaths and flowers were placed near the symbolic flame by the dignitaries present, after which a moment of silence was held. Thousands of visitors are expected to visit the memorial during the course of the day.
