22 February: There has been an assasination attempt against the President of the self declared republic of Abkhazia, Alexander Ankvab. Unknown assailants fired at his car as he was travelling from Gudauta to his office in Sukhumi this morning (agencies)

This is the fifth assassination attempt on Ankvab in the past five years. Two unsuccessful attacks were carried out in 2005. In 2007 he received a slight concussion and a shrapnel injury to the back when his car came under attack from a grenade launcher. In 2009, Alexander Ankvab was injured when his house was attached by someone using a grenade launcher. Ankvab received shrapnel wounds to his arm and leg.
