Thousands of people took to the streets of Turkey on Friday night to defy an attempted coup by a section of the Turkish military. Turks were responding to a call from Turkish President Recip Tayip Erdogan who called on Turks to go out and defend Turkish democracy.
The coup started late on Friday when tanks occupied strategic points in Ankara and Istanbul. A statement read on state TV which was one of the buildings taken over by the military announced the formation of a "Peace Council" and declared martial law and a curfew. However after the appeal of President Erdogan thousands of people flocked to the streets in protest against the coup. The Turkish government said that only a part of the military were involved in the coup and they hoped to get the situation under control within hours.
