Seven die in shoot out between militants and police in Chechnya

Four militants and three policeman were killed in a shootout in the capital of Chechnya, Grozny on Tuesday morning.

The Russian news agency TASS reported that Russian law enforcement officers located the militants at a location in Oktyabrsky district of Grozny. The agency reported that the militants refused to surrender, after which the head of the FSB department for the Chechen Republic made a decision to conduct a counter-terrorist operation.

The incident is one of the most serious reported in the Chechen capital in recent years, and indicates that the threat from Islamic militants, which the Russian authorities continue to say has been completely neutralised, in fact remains.
