Russia has once again prosecuted a former regional administrator bordering Ukraine. This time, the case concerns Vladimir Bazarov, the former deputy governor of Kursk. He has been arrested. He is suspected of corruption in connection with the embezzlement of around 10 million euros during the construction of defensive structures. This information was reported by the state press agency TASS.
Last year, the Ukrainian army invaded Kursk in a surprise attack and was only driven back after months of fighting. In July, President Putin dismissed his Minister of Transport, Roman Starovojt, who had previously been governor of Kursk. According to the Russian authorities, Starovojt was found dead in his car the same day after committing suicide.
According to TASS, the authorities are investigating Bazarov's office. The governor of Kursk has confirmed that Bazarov has indeed been arrested. Last month, Nikolai Simonenko, the deputy governor of the border region of Bryansk, was also charged with corruption. He is alleged to have embezzled funds intended for improving security on the border with Ukraine.
