Azerbaijan's membership in UN SC poses no threat to Armenia

Azerbaijan's non-permanent member status in the UN Security Council does not pose any threat to Armenia for the time being, Head of the International Organizations Department of Armenia's Foreign Ministry Lilit Tutkharyan said during a roundtable discussion on the 20th year of Armenia's membership in the UN.

However, this status has given the Azeris a free hand in spreading the myth about "massacres" in Khojaly.

"They are doing it verbally as they have no facts for an official document that would comply with the UN's tough requirements," Tutkharyan said.

She said that Armenia is making active efforts to give the UN a true picture of the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process and to convince more UN members to recognize the Armenian Genocide.

But in the opinion of Grisha Arakelyan, professor of Yerevan State University, the UN has the so-called problem of small countries and simply ignores issues like the Armenian Genocide. "Armenia is among such countries. So, we should not expect miracles from the UN," Arakelyan said.

The roundtable was organized by the Club of Young Diplomats and the International Academy of Education.
