Donald Trump’s tactic when things do not go “his way” is to threaten tariffs. Despite his administration making the United States an unpredictable partner, he continues to threaten tariffs on countries that adapt to the current global system and seek more reliable economic partners. This time around, the chosen target is Canada. Donald Trump has lashed out at Canada, threatening to hit it with 100% tariffs if Prime Minister Mark Carney reaches a trade agreement with China.
Trump wrote on his social media platform that if Carney believes he can turn Canada into a “drop‑off port” for Chinese goods entering the United States, he is gravely mistaken. Trump warned that China would “devour” Canada, destroying its businesses, social structure, and way of life. He said that if Canada signs a deal with China, the United States will immediately impose tariffs of 100% on all Canadian goods and products entering the U.S.
The tensions between the two countries have grown since last year, after Trump previously suggested annexing Canada and later withdrew Canada’s invitation to the U.S. Board of Peace Initiative. During a recent visit to China, Carney described Beijing as a “reliable and predictable partner” and urged European leaders to encourage Chinese investment in their countries, which seemed to irritate Trump.
