According to various Ukrainian media reports, several Ukrainian cities were hit on the night of Tuesday 8 July into Wednesday 9 July by the heaviest Russian missile and drone attack since the large-scale invasion in February 2022. The capital, Kyiv, was among the cities that came under heavy fire, according to Kyiv Independent journalists who were on the scene.
The Ukrainian air force reported that the westernmost regions of the country were also attacked, including the cities of Lutsk, Lviv, Khmelnytsky and Ternopil. Russia is said to have deployed a total of 728 drones, seven cruise missiles and six ballistic missiles. Most of the drones (415) disappeared from radar, and Ukraine claims that 296 were shot down, as were seven missiles.
Ihor Polischuk, the mayor of Lutsk, a city that has been heavily shelled, said that an industrial site and a garage were among the buildings damaged. In Brovary, a city just outside Kyiv, a woman was injured. There were no reported deaths.
