The United States and Iran will hold nuclear talks in Oman on Friday, after regional leaders helped salvage negotiations that had appeared close to failing.
The talks come amid escalating rhetoric. President Donald Trump warned that Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, “should be very worried” if a deal is not reached, while Khamenei said any US attack would trigger a “regional war”.
Washington says any agreement must go beyond Iran’s nuclear programme to include its ballistic missiles, regional activities, and domestic repression. Araghchi said Iran agreed with the principle of “no nuclear weapons” but rejected what he called “impossible” demands.
The talks also come against the backdrop of deadly protests in Iran over economic collapse and political grievances. Trump said the US had “had their back” during the unrest, which Iranian authorities describe as foreign-backed “sedition”. Human rights groups report thousands killed in the crackdown, which Tehran disputes.
