Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has ordered the launch of bilateral talks with the United States on Iran’s nuclear programme, according to local media.
US President Donald Trump warned that “time is running out” for Iran to reach a deal, following Tehran’s deadly crackdown on anti-government protests that peaked last month. In response, Trump has deployed an aircraft carrier strike group to the Middle East.
“President Pezeshkian has ordered the opening of talks with the United States,” Iran’s Fars news agency reported on Monday, citing an unnamed government source. Fars said the two sides would hold discussions on the nuclear issue, though no date was specified. The report was also carried by the state-run daily Iran and the reformist newspaper Shargh.
Earlier on Monday, Iranian officials said Tehran was finalising a framework for negotiations, with messages between Iran and the United States being exchanged through regional intermediaries.
“Several points have been addressed, and we are examining and finalising the details of each stage of the diplomatic process, which we hope to conclude in the coming days,” foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said, without providing details on the substance of the talks.
