Одной из важных целей, которые преследует политика США в Армении, является оказание республике содействия в создании альтернатив в сферах экономики, политики и безопасности, в которых Армения крайне нуждается. Подобное мнение 7 февраля во время семинара в Ереване на тему "Новые вызовы региональной безопасности", организованном Центром стратегических исследований имени Джорджа Маршалла, выразил посол США в Армении Джон Хефферн.

Он подчеркнул, что речь идет не о замене, а именно об альтернативе. "Одним из самых легких путей обеспечения подобной альтернативы для Армении представляет открытие границы с Турцией. Нет такой страны в мире, которая бы желала ограничить свои коммуникации одной-двумя странами. Именно поэтому Соединенные Штаты тщательно следят за процессом продвижения армяно-турецких протоколов, подписанных в 2009 году в Цюрихе. Мы считаем, что оба эти документа должны быть ратифицированы парламентами двух стран без каких-либо предусловий. Это крайне важно для продвижения процесса", - подчеркнул посол.

Аналогичное мнение прозвучало в выступлении посла Германии в Армении Ганса-Йохена Шмидта. Немецкий посол особо подчеркнул настроенность Армении на нормализацию отношений с Турцией, в частности, открытие границ. Шмидт выделил, что в контексте экономических санкций против Ирана, которые могут создать серьезные проблемы для Армении, открытие армяно-турецкой границы откроет для Армении новые экономические и коммуникативные возможности. "В этом смысле для Армении отношения с Турцией альтернативы не имеют", - заявил посол Германии.

Нормализация армяно-турецких отношений началась 10 октября 2009 года, когда главы МИД Армении и Турции подписали в Цюрихе "Протокол об установлении дипотношений" и "Протокол о развитии двусторонних отношений", которые должны были быть ратифицированы парламентами двух стран. В свете того, что Турция всячески тянула с ратификацией документов, президент Армении Серж Саргсян 22 апреля 2010 подписал указ о приостановлении процесса ратификации армяно-турецких протоколов.  Тем не менее, оба документа остаются в повестке дня НС.

Borrell underlined that the European Union will make every effort to support the peace process and to remain a committed partner to the Afghan people. "Of course, we will have to take into account the evolving situation, but disengagement is not an option.  We are clear on that: there is no alternative to a negotiated political settlement, through inclusive peace talks.

Dozens participate in new Armenia-Azerbaijan dialogue process as societies prepare for the signing of historic peace agreement

The governments of Armenia and Azerbaijan have recently agreed the text of a historic peace agreement that ends years of animosity and warfare. The agreement is expected to be signed soon. LINKS Europe, which has a long history of engagement with the process of peace in the region, recently launched a new Armenia-Azerbaijan dialogue format in the framework of the European Union's EU4Peace initiative. In the last two weeks dozens of Armenians and Azerbaijanis, including academics, students, civil society activists, journalists and other professionals, many of them young, were involved. The work is organised in five thematic groups focusing on peace and security, connectivity, environment, governance and gender and equality and in phase 2 of the project, which has just ended, around fifty participants took part in in-person and online meetings, and more than twenty others were involved indirectly. The Chairpersons of the five thematic groups met in Vilnius, 3-6 July to launch the third phase of the program. The five thematic groups are now working on separate reports, which are expected to be finished in November and presented to the two governments and other stakeholders. The reports will outline a vision, up to 2040.
