Analysis: Landmine contamination in Azerbaijan’s Aghdam region prevents tens of thousands of displaced persons from returning to their homes

The dust of war from the decades-long conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan has started to settle, and although peace remains elusive, there is hope across the region for a better future. No-one has waited for this moment more than the hundreds of thousands of Azerbaijanis who were displaced by the First Karabakh War in the early 1990s.

Landmine Free South Caucasus campaign releases educational videos on consequences of landmines in five languages

The regional campaign LANDMINE FREE SOUTH CAUCASUS has released a series of educational cartoons on the consequences of landmines and explosive remnants of war in the South Caucasus.

The videos have been produced in five languages: Georgian, Armenian, Azerbaijani, English, and Russian.

The humanitarian dimension of the landmine problem in the South Caucasus emphasised during event in Azerbaijan's Fizuli region

In the framework of the regional campaign LANDMINE FREE SOUTH CAUCASUS, the Azerbaijani non-governmental -organisation “Azerbaijan Campaign to Ban Landmines”, held an event in the town of Horadiz in the Fizuli Region during which the humanitarian consequences of landmine contamination was emphasised. The Fizuli Region, as with other nearby regions of Azerbaijan such as Aghdam, is just starting to recover from the ravishes of decades of war.

"Azerbaijan Campaign to ban landmines" holds awareness-raising event in Baku

The Azerbaijani NGO "Azerbaijan Campaign to Ban Landmines" has held an event in Baku State University to mark International Landmines Awareness Day. The focus of the event was the impact of landmines on victims and their communities - which is also the current theme of the regional campaign Landmine Free South Caucasus. During the event, attended by over a hundred students from Baku State University presentations were made by Hafiz Safikhanov, Director of "Azerbaijan Campaign to Ban Landmines" (picture below) and a representative of ANAMA, the national state demining agency of Azerbaijan.

Landmine Free South Caucasus: message on the occasion of the International Day for Mine Awareness

4 April is marked each year as the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action by the United Nations and countries, organisations and communities across the world. This year, the theme is “Mine action cannot wait”. This is a particularly poignant theme in the South Caucasus where the problem of landmines is acute and the region is now identified as being amongst the ones with the highest contamination of landmines in the world. The campaign Landmine Free South Caucasus joins the international community to mark this year’s International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action. In particular, we raise our voice with that of the rest of the international community in saying that “Mine action cannot wait”. Since 2018, the campaign Landmine Free South Caucasus has worked with partners in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia to raise awareness on the issue of landmines across the region, to highlight the good work being done by deminers at considerable personal risk, and to focus on the impact of landmines on victims and their communities.

"The International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action on 4 April seeks to bring to the world’s attention the areas of the planet which, sometimes even decades after the end of the conflict and despite years of work already having been undertaken, still are affected by landmines and ERWs," writes Patrick Norén in this op-ed for commonspace.eu. Landmines will not "magically disappear of their own accord. They will not evaporate into thin air.

Landmine Free South Caucasus by the end of the decade
The 2022 Landmine Free South Caucasus campaign is calling for the region of the South Caucasus to be cleared of landmines and other unexploded remnants of war by the end of the decade. In an appeal published to launch this year's campaign it is pointed out that the South Caucasus remains one of the areas most infected with contamination by landmines and other unexploded remnants of war in the world. Apart from the thousands of casualties caused directly or indirectly by landmines and other unexploded ordnance over the last three and a half decades, including several hundred in the last year, this contamination negatively impacts whole communities across the region, affecting their economic well-being, and exposing them to the constant threat of risk and danger. 30th November will this year be marked as a Day of Solidarity with the victims of landmines and other unexploded remnants of war in the South Caucasus. For the rest of the year and in the first half of 2023 the regional campaign Landmine Free South Caucasus will work to raise awareness of the impact of landmines and other remnants of war on individuals and communities across the region.
